PREFACE

My fondness for the American School of Madrid runs deeply. It was my alma mater for a few years on either side of the millennium, a formative time of my life. I have lasting memories of the brick buildings, walking the halls, and queueing up for lunch.

After receiving my postgraduate degree and certificating in Art Education K-12, I returned to the school to be on the other side of learning — to substitute teach. It was there that I met the colourful Lisa Kerr, the then Head of Communications, and formed a powerful bond over the mutual desire to reinvigorate, re-energise, and redesign the marketing collateral of the school. Innately creative, Lisa harnessed her love of good design and endeavoured to produce a swath of new materials for the community to enjoy. As a result, we have collaborated on annual reports, magazines, official documents, social media, email marketing, brochures, guides and handbooks, profiles, infographics, and more through the years.

Brand Book & Style Sheet

Until this document, the American School of Madrid had never produced a brand book or had a style guide to adhere to. The Communications Team commissioned a comprehensive, practical and illustrative style guide to use internally.

Using a bold, modern approach, we designed a guideline that was both easy to follow and represented the energetic atmosphere of their educational community. We wanted to create a style guide that the staff could easily understand using a language void of technical jargon as well as utilising infographics and in-situ examples.

“ASM Today” Magazine

The American School of Madrid commissioned an end-of-the-year magazine, ASM Today, to celebrate the achievements and milestones of the school community. The theme revolved around progressive learning and the academic experiences of the educators, administrators, and students throughout the year.

Celebrating the dynamic, energetic atmosphere of the campus, the look and feel of the publication draw inspiration from the then-recent campus improvements and colourful school materials that complement the magazine's crowdsourced contents.

Annual reports

Over the years, we’ve designed four annual reports for ASM. For each publication, we draw inspiration from the theme of the issue, a topic directed by the administrators.

The goal is to create an engaging document that illustrates the institutions successes and achievements of that year.

Official Transcript redesign

An official redesign of the Official Transcript was commissioned as part of the efforts to reinvigorate the look of the official documents and suites of stationery. The major challenge was to create a document that was visually appealing yet dense with information and one that could work with the data software.

COVID-19 safety infographics

The American School of Madrid wanted to create a series of safety infographics to use around school as an A3 poster, on social media, and through direct email marketing.

The challenge was to make a graphic representation of a vast amount of copy and still create visually interesting artwork for an audience of varied ages on multiple platforms.

"Spectrum" Magazines

Spearheaded by Alumni Coodinator Daniel Grzywacz, Spectrum is a school publication focused on community and alumni stories. The entire publication is dedicated to showcasing profiles, features and interviews of alumni and current staff, school updates, and alumni news.

We decided to approach the design of the magazine to have a bold and dynamic layout, utilising cut out images, playful layouts and typographic treatments.
